Why is carpet such a great choice for many of the rooms within your home?

  • Carpeting comes in a wide array of colors, patterns and styles to match all personal taste and decor.
  • The cushioned surface absorbs sound and makes less noise when walked on than hard surface flooring.
  • Carpet is one of the most affordable flooring products to have installed.
  • Carpeting also works as insulation, providing additional warmth during cold seasons.
  • Carpet's non-slip surface is safe underfoot and it's cusion prevents damage should a delicate item accidentally be dropped.
  • Synthetic carpeting is generally given static, stain and soil resistant treatments making them easier to clean and maintain.

carpeting-nj-1Select the Right Fiber for You

Choosing the right fiber is all about how you are going to use each room. There are four basic types of fiber:

Nylon:

Nylon that has been treated with stain protection is the most durable and stain resistant carpet fiber on the market. It is the fiber of choice for active homes with pets and children- or even for those who entertain at home often. This fiber is ideal for heavy trafficked areas like hallways and stairsPerfect for heavy traffic in hallways and stairs.

Polyester

Known for its luxurious look, feel and wonderful selection of colors and styles, Polyester is a good value for homes with the average amount of traffic and activity across its floors.

Olefin

Its good stain and moisture resistance gives Olefin an advantage in an area prone to spills, but it doesn not hold form under heavy activity as well as nylon and polyester.

Wool

Wool has long been desirable for its natural beauty- not to mention its soil resistance qualities. Wool is well constructed and holds its aesthetic appeal for a long time.

Carpet Construction

Nearly all residential carpet is tufted carpet. A tufting machine is kind of like an oversized sewing machine; its hundreds of needles insert loops of fiber (tufts or stitches) into the carpet's backing to make the face pile of the carpet.

The life of a carpet is largely determined by how well it is made. The twist of the fibers and the density of the tufts are the qualities that determine the durability, appearance, adn price.

Twist

How tight the carpet yarn or fiber has been twisted determines how well the carpet will stand up to crushing and matting. The "twist" of a carpet is especially important in cut pile carpeting because the tips are exposed and can become untwisted, giving the carpet a matted and worn appearance.

Frieze carpet has the highest twist level at about 7-9 twists per inch (TPI), whereas most cut pile carpet styles have between 3-6 twists per inch.

carpeting-nj-2Density

Both the amount of fibers and how tightly packed together they are makes up the density of carpet. The carpet will wear and perform better based on the density of its fibers.

You can check the density of carpet by pressing your fingers on the carpet fibers toward the carpet backing; the more difficult it is to reach the backing, the denser the carpet. With outward facing tufts, you can bend the carpet into a U-shape and look at how much of the carpet backing is visible (the less backing that shows, the denser it is).

The Level of Stain Resistance

It's vital for the life of your carpet to consider how the room will be lived in. If you are likely to be entertaining in the room or have kids, pets, and high traffic areas, then you will need a carpet with stain resistance. Fortunately, you won't have to limit your choice of styles or colors to incorporate quality stain resistance.

It is the type of carpet fiber that determines the level of stain resistance. Most manufacturers do apply post-production stain protection treatments to enhance the natural stain resistance of any carpet fiber. Your Floor Town Sales Professional would be more than happy to assist you in making a flooring choice to suit your lifestyle. Carpet Color

The floor is much like a fifth wall that connects all of the other design elements of a room. The walls, window treatments and other furnishings should be considered when choosing a color scheme. It is always helpful to bring fabric and color samples when you visit our store, so that our flooring experts will be able to best assist you.

Carpet Styles to Match Your Lifestyle

Cut

Cut carpet is made up of yarns that are cut off at the ends. Cut carpet's soft feel makes it a perfect choice for bedrooms, living rooms and family rooms.

The five basic styles of cut pile carpet (Velvet, Saxony, Frieze, Shag, and Cable) each provide a different look and texture. The amount of twist in the carpet fiber is what makes the primary difference between carpet styles; this also influences the carpet's durability.

Loop

carpeting-nj-3Loop carpet has its name because its yarns are looped and uncut on the carpet surface. The pile height can vary from low and tightly constructed to more luxurious, loosely constructed, high-level pile.

Loop carpet's strength and soil hiding capabilities give this style ideal qualities for heavy traffic areas. Berber, the most popular style of loop carpet, can be constructed as a level-loop or multi-loop carpet.

Cut-loop

This type of carpet has a combination of both high cut tufts and lower loops in a variety of sculpted patterns. Cut-loop carpets offer good performance, but are slightly less durable than loop carpets.
